Bari (Saint Nicholas Cathedral)

Bari is a small Italian city where the relics of Saint Nicholas rest. After spending the day here, Denis and I took an overnight ferry to Igumenista in Greece.

A street in Bari's old town. There was a cultural charm in Bari that was lacking in the big tourist cities that we had previously visited.

This Italian lady was pleased to let us take her picture as she made pasta from scratch outside of her shop.

Denis tells me that this statue outside of St. Nicholas Cathedral is made by a very famous contemporary Orthodox sculptor.

The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas. In the basement of this Cathedral there is an altar containing the relics of Saint Nicholas. There is also an Orthodox chapel where Denis and I were able to participate in an Akathist (in Russian) and meet some people who would later accompany us in Greece.

dan, do you know how far myra is (his birthplace?) from bari?

i just read st. nicholas's story to a little girl (nicole) today, and she was wondering where that house would be, the one where he tossed up the bags of gold through the open windows for the father's daughters. (she also liked the part about him punching arius at the council.)

bari would be a cool place to be for st. nicholas day!
